Description
Native Root at a glance
Native Root is a women-majority, family-run specialty coffee producer and exporter from Tierradentro, Cauca. Led by third-generation Nasa Indigenous growers, the Liz Andela family farms two hectares with about 10,000 trees and partners with neighbors through minga—shared community work. Since 2017, the project has joined ancestral knowledge with modern agronomy to deliver traceable, single-origin Colombian coffee.
People and place
The farm sits on volcanic soils that are renewed by ashfall and cooled by mountain air. Shade from plantain, native trees, and diverse crops protects the coffee and feeds the soil. Springs cross the property, so water stewardship is part of daily work. Because the land is ancestral, caring for it is cultural duty as much as agronomy.
Farming philosophy
Regenerative practices guide every decision. The family plants in polyculture, uses organic inputs, and keeps living shade for birds, bees, and wildlife. Moreover, they view the territory as the primary stakeholder; coffee thrives only when the wider ecosystem is healthy. This approach sustains yields, preserves biodiversity, and keeps flavors clean.
From hardship to renewal
In 2010 low international prices forced many plots to be cut. However, the family reorganized, diversified, and built direct relationships. Today they pay transparently, share knowledge with neighbors, and export under their own brand. As a result, value remains in the community and each harvest supports local livelihoods.
Coffees and flavor profiles
Native Root offers washed, honey, and natural lots that reflect place and process. Community blends show classic Colombian character with chocolate, panela, and medium acidity. Honey and natural micro-lots lean floral and fruit-forward with bright, tropical notes. Yellow Tabi and other varieties appear in limited runs, always traceable to farm and process.
Quality from crop to cup
Care starts in the nursery and continues through flowering, harvest, and selection. Cherries are picked ripe, processed thoughtfully, and dried with slow, even airflow. Then the family cups each lot, confirms moisture and water activity, and prepares export documentation. Therefore buyers receive consistent coffee with a clear origin story.
Why it matters
Every bag links you to Nasa heritage, resilient farming, and a community that chose dignity over volume. The purchase protects soils and water, rewards fair work, and keeps Indigenous culture alive in the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia. In short, Native Root turns “crop to cup” into a relationship built on respect.
